Sea Cliff Cottages
Calibishie

Perched on a hill with a truly magnificent view of the sea below, these four delightful cottages provide you with all your needs while visiting Dominica. Situated on three acres of attractively landscaped grounds, each of the four cottages provides a sense of privacy and relaxation as you sit on your balcony watching the moonlight shimmer on the palms and listen to the rhythmic surf below.

Fruit trees and gardens are planted around the cottages and hummingbirds dart from blossom to blossom with their brilliant colours flashing in the sunlight..

The beach below is a good swimming place with the added attraction of a fresh water river flowing in to the sea . Wonderful to rinse off after bathing in the salt. We are close to other beaches, a lovely waterfall, the carib territory , rainforest and lots of hiking trails up to the ridges.
SeaCliff is a wonderful place for hikers and nature lovers. Artists and photographers will be equally happy here with so many beautiful vistas every where you look. We can offer you a chance to learn about and be a part of local island culture . Talk to the local people when you stroll down into the village and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the area. People are very proud of their beautiful country and happy to share their knowledge with you.
Staying at SeaCliff will give you insight into the heart of Dominica !

The cottages are designed with an open concept. Cathedral ceilings and tiled floors open onto balconies facing the sea. We try to be environmentally correct by using solar hot water, composting, and staying away from harmful pesticides, sprays etc. The water is fresh and pure, piped into the houses from the rivers high in the mountains.  The modern kitchens are complete with all that is needed for meal preparation and all linens and towels are provided for . Catering, maid and laundry service are available upon request or, if you prefer, you are welcome to the use of our laundry facility. A baby bed is also provided for those traveling with very small toddlers.  Several barbeques are on the grounds for people who enjoy grilling an evening meal and  the balconies have outdoor furniture for dining as well

There are no apartments attached to the cottages so you do not have to concern yourself with people living above ,or below you, as each building is rented to only one group at a time. Each cottage has a cell phone and wireless internet is provided

This cottage was designed as a place for one or two people to spend their holiday time. It is about 500 sq. feet with a complete kitchen area, three piece bathroom, dining area and bedsitting area. A ceiling fan keeps you cool on the rare day that the ocean breeze isn't blowing. The balcony is quite large with a wonderful view of the island below. Cosy and intimate, it is perfect for a romantic getaway .

Slightly removed from the others, the two bedroom cottage features almost an acre of flowers, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. Surrounded by lots of open space, it is a favourite for family groups with active children. The main bedroom has a queen size bed and the other room has two twin beds. Both bedrooms have ceiling fans for your sleeping comfort. There is a fold down double futon couch in the living room which can be used for extra sleeping space if needed. The balcony faces the sea and runs full length across the front of the house. Cable TV and a CD/cassette player are provided for your further enjoyment.

ONE BEDROOM COTTAGE !!...sleeps 2 to 4
This cottage is a pretty little one bedroom dwelling. As in the other houses there are cathedral ceilings and tile throughout. The bed is queensized and there is an ensuite 3 piece bathroom. A complete kitchen setup, dining area and sitting room provide you with ample space to relax in. There is cable TV, stereo cassette and telephone featured as well.
The back of the cottage looks out over the pineapple garden and fruit trees and is shaded by a huge old mango tree. The balcony in the front looks out to the sea and islands below.
The fold down futon couch in the living area can be used as a double bed if extra sleeping space is demanded.

ONE BEDROOM HOME sleeps 2 to 4,  6 with annex **  ( One week minimum stay in winter season)

This is a creatively designed one bedroom cottage. It is particularly suited for couples looking for more space and seclusion. In addition to the queensize bed, a fold down futon couch provides extra sleeping space. CD/cassette stereo, cable TV, VCR and washing machine are also included for your use. Dual voltage wiring is an extra convenience as well as a passive solar water system.  Large glass doors open onto the balcony with a spectacular view of the sea and island below as well as the mountains and river valley inland. Totally private, you can relax completely .
A small annex has been added below with a bedsitting room (double bed), kichenette and bath. If you wish to rent this in conjunction with the main house it will cost another $25 per night. The annex will not be rented separately from the main house.

No extra service charges are added on, unless
you wish to have cleaning or catering provided.

HIKING TRAILS AND SITES OF INTEREST

Although we do not offer set "tours" we have several guides who will be happy to take you to various spots if you wish.  Otherwise ,there is lots that you can do on your own. There are numerous small roads that lead up into the hills behind Calibishie. These are "feeder roads" for the banana farmers and lead up onto the ridges looking down on the valleys below. Partly bush and part banana plantation, there are some incredible views as you look across the valleys and out to the sea. During nesting season, you can see flocks of parrots in the trees.
Various rivers flow down from the mountains with waterfalls and
bathing pools if you know where to look. Just past the village of Bense (a couple of miles from Calibishie ) is a lovely little waterfall, the Chaudiere Falls, where you can dive from the top into the pool below. Off the beaten track in the forest it is a wonderful spot to spend the day.

Syndicate Trail (past the town of Portsmouth) will lead you up into the rainforest and a natural habitat for the parrots as well. The Syndicate Falls are one  of the least known and beautiful Falls on the island.

The "Red Rocks" are another place of wild , unexpected beauty. Just a few minutes walk from the cottage you can walk down on this promotory and surround yourself with the crashing of the sea and views of the village below and the french islands on the horizon.

The Carib Territory is about a half hour drive along the coast. The villages are small with wonderful gardens. If you are interested in horticulture watch for the place that grows a variety of local orchids and other exotic plants to sell. It is on the left hand side of the road but if you miss it--just ask someone. The Caribs are well known for their unique basket designs and skill in boat building. Tiny shops selling their wares are dotted along the road.
If you continue down the road you will enter the Central Forest Reserve which has been set aside by the government as a protected rainforest. The roads are narrow and winding as they climb into the mountains then back down again to the southern coast. The capitol city of Roseau is about an hour and one half away.

One of, if not the ,most beautiful drives on the island is down the road along the coast past Vielle Casse and Pennville to Portsmouth. A winding coastal road climbing high into the hills takes you by one of the most fertile growing areas in the country. Small farms hang precariously to the mountainsides with the sea crashing on the rocks below. Partway through the trip stop and explore the sulphur springs, talk to the farmers and maybe buy some of the freshest produce on island.

There are many other spots to discover and explore. The Northeast is truly dramatic and exhilarating !

Bicycling

For those who are serious bikers this is a wonderful place to be. Bring your bicycle and spend time searching out hidden roads with incredible views . Challenge yourself on the mountain roads, find fresh rivers to bathe in on your tour, meet the local folk and treat yourself to a unique adventure. Don't forget to bring a few of those necessary parts along with you. The shops may be not be close by if you need them. !

FOOD AND RESTAURANTS

There are several good restaurants in the village of Calibishie which will provide you with local, French or North American fare.  The grocery stores are small, but well stocked with your basic needs. As Calibishie is a fishing village, a walk down to the Bayside in the afternoon can reward you with some snapper or kingfish for your evening meal. The boats come in about 4:30 with the daily catch.
An excellent outdoor market is held twice a week in the town of Portsmouth, about 12 miles away. All the fresh fruit, vegetables and spices grown on the island are available there. Local farmers also come around to the houses with the produce they are growing. A variety of fruit trees are planted on the property and you can enjoy limes, papaya, guava, grapefruit, mangoes etc. according to the season.

If you give a little advance warning we can arrange for a local meal to be brought to your cottage for the times you do not wish to cook for yourself or make the effort to go to a restaurant !!.

BEACHES AND SWIMMING

We are lucky to be on one of the best beaches in the northeast for swimming and snorkeling. The beach that you see from the balcony is accessible by a pathway close to the property. Generally very quiet, except for some fishermen and maybe a family doing their washing in the river flowing into the sea, you can snorkel on the reef, swim or explore the small island just off shore. The river is a favourite spot for children to play and is convenient for washing the salt water off after a swim in the ocean.

Point Baptiste, (the next beach down), can be reached by foot or car. It is about 1/2 mile away and another area of spectacular beauty. A third sandy beach, Woodford Hill Beach, is about a half hour walk or a 5 minute drive.

Come and enjoy Dominica with us. For those who stay for a week you will get one nights free lodging.
